Plastic #2 (HDPE)

Alternative ways to recycle
Check Your Local Recycling Guidelines

Plastic #2 (HDPE) includes cups, milk and juice jugs, detergent bottles, and others.

Reduce and Reuse
Check out your local bulk purchasing stores to see if they offer bulk cleaning or hygiene products. Often you’ll be able to use your own containers and reduce your use of unnecessary packaging.

If you don’t have this kind of option, opt for larger containers of your favorite products when possible.

Clean Out Containers
If a container once held soap, food, liquids, or other residue, clean and dry the container as well as you can before recycling it. Containers should be empty of residue and lightly cleaned, but don’t need to be spotless! Make sure containers are relatively clean to avoid recyclables being sent to landfill.

Not Infinitely Recyclable
Plastic isn’t infinitely recyclable as its quality declines each time it’s recycled, and new plastic needs to be added in order to keep recycling it.

Help Prevent Litter
Plastic #2 bags are a lightweight material that easily finds their way into the environment, where they can entangle animals or form microplastics. Dispose of it properly to prevent it from becoming litter.

No Plastic Bags in Curbside Recycling

Many plastic bags are labeled plastic #2 or #4, but they are too thin to recycle with hard plastics and will get caught in recycling machinery. Find out how to dispose of plastic bags.

Empty Motor Oil Containers are Hazardous Waste

Even if an empty, cleaned motor oil container is marked as HDPE #2 plastic, it is still hazardous waste. Learn how to dispose of empty motor oil containers.
